How does one make synchronicity’s acquaintance?

Synchronicity.

When things fall into place just so.

When good fortune touches a moment, an hour, a day.

When things work like they’re supposed to.

When life is good, the sun shines, and birds sing.

When the day smiles at you and beckons you to go forward.

Because everything is going to be fine.

Today wasn’t that day.

Opening one bleary eye to stare at the alarm clock that hadn’t gone off, I realized I was late.
Way late–to do something that I hate almost as much as going to the dentist.

What’s that, you ask?

The dreaded pap smear, or as I like to call it, the “cavity inspection.”

Jumping out of bed as fast as my wonky knee would allow it, I made for the shower.

Twenty minutes later, I was exiting the building, but not before hitting my elbow on the hand rail.

As I ran to the bus stop, an elderly woman sitting in her garden took great delight in telling me that the bus “had just left.”

Just as my derriere was about to make contact with the bus seat, the bus driver announced that we had to get off the bus.

I didn’t understand a word he said and instead came to this conclusion as I witnessed the exodus of fellow passengers.

Two minutes later, a kind woman who saw my bewildered state informed me that there was an accident on the main road and vehicles weren’t allowed to pass.

Realizing I only had twenty minutes to get to the hospital, I did the only thing left to do: I ran power walked the two miles.

With sweat trickling down my back and other body parts, I arrived at my destination with one minute to spare.

Never you mind that my wonky knee almost gave out twice or that I realized half way through my trek that the feeling of freshness I had experienced after my shower was long gone.

Perspiring, hyperventilating, and realizing I desperately needed to find a bidet, I made my way to the counter.

Ten minutes later, I was on a gurney being told to prop my legs on stirrups and relax.
(An oxymoron, if you ask me.)

Metal clamps waving ominously before my eyes, I realized today was not the day.

The day when synchronicity makes the world a perfect place.

When a stranger who looks like Javier Bardem looks at you admiringly and asks, “How you doin’?”

When butterflies land on your shoulder and little children smile at you sweetly.

Today was a day when birds poop on your head.

Because that’s exactly what happened as I left the hospital.

Synchronicity.

I have yet to make its acquaintance.

When was the last time you experienced synchronicity?

Note: Today’s photo has nothing to do with synchronicity–of course!

Instead, it’s a reminder that tomorrow is National Coffee Day.

Drink up, fellow coffee lovers!

  1. I’m sorry darlink, I will be glad to answer your question once I quit snorting coffee out my nose, spitting on my keyboard, and howling with laughter. I do hope you meant this post to be a funny take on a perfectly awful day. Otherwise, I’m so terribly sorry I am laughing!

    1. Nan, love, if you’re howling, I’m a happy woman! hee hee! Yes, this was indeed a funny take on an awful day and I am honored that you found it funny! Thanks for making my day, love! :)

  2. I really do love reading your blog :)

I always call pap smears “oil changes”. The last time I managed to get an appointment it just so happened to fall on a day where I had already scheduled a wax. I didn’t want to reschedule either, so I soldiered ahead, only to completely wreck myself over thinking about what the doc was thinking about me! I actually blurted out to her: I DIDN’T GET WAXED JUST FOR THIS.

    Good grief.

Good thing she just burst out laughing! I’m sure doctors have seen it all (and back again.)

I love days where everything just seems to fall into place. I haven’t had one quite like you’ve so beautifully described – I must be due soon!
    xx

    1. Ethel, you are my hero! A pap and a wax? Lady, I worship at your shrine! ha! Methinks this would make a hilarious blog post! Think about it! Who knows, it might lead you to have a day filled with synchronicity! :)

  3. Synchronicity? Total? Will semi-synch do?

Not to sound like a stick-in-the-mud, but I can’t recall the last time all the planets aligned. Seems like there’s always something that doesn’t quite hit the mark, needs attention or fixing.

But after your day, you should be good. That’s gotta be all the bad luck you’re supposed to get for a while!

    1. What is it with you and I only have semi-sync? What must we do to get out of this rut, girlfriend. I think it’s time we either made a deal with whoever or brainstormed for a better idea! hee hee! :)

  4. Tell me you’re kidding, Bella. Is there such a thing as a-synchronicity or dis-synchronicity ? Because if there is, I don’t want any, thank you! You’ve got to get yourself an extra large does of coffee today (it’s Coffee Day here already!). ♥

    1. Corinne, I followed your advice and totally over caffeinated! I’m wired and I feel good! hee hee! And sadly, lady, all of this happened. Mama said there’d be days like, this. Mamma said. :)

  5. Tell me about being out of sync! I have had so many of those days, Bella. It used to really frustrate me but now I look at it more philosophically….there is always a reason why some days you have birds poop on your head! I am glad you reached on time for that “cavity inspection” and I hope all is well.

    1. Rimly, your forever wisdom always keeps me grounded. I shall take your advice and see this day through the “the glass is half full” mentality. All is well, sweet lady. Thank you for your well wishes! Hugs! :)

  6. Well, synchronicity can also mean stepping off the bottom step just as the ball rolled by some kid finds its way under your foot, opening your mouth to yell as a passing moth wanders into your mouth and then gesticulating wildly, thus attracting the attention of an angry dog which turns to attack, and in the process of running away you find yourself right under the window that has disgorged a piano that the movers have lost their grip on….Sounds like you DID experience some of it!

    1. Jodi girl, you are right. When I realize calamity only lasted two hours or so, things don’t seem all that bad. I think. ha! :)

  7. I had no idea where this was heading when I started reading! Oh my! :p Well, my dear, as others have said, I’m not sure synchronicity is only for pleasant events. I think your day was perfectly set up for you to be in the line of bird poop at the right (?) moment. And by the way, the red carpet Javier Bardem can leer at me any day … but not the No Country for Old Men one ….

    1. Adriene, was I effective in reeling you in? Aw, I’m stoked! ha! You had me laughing out loud with the “No Country for Old Men” line! Oh my goodness, how did make up artists take a god like that and transform him into that ugly man with bad hair day syndrome? Incredible! ha! :)

  8. Bella, I’m so sorry to laugh at your misfortunes, but guffaw I did! Was writing about your day was cathartic, at least? Hope today is better–at last there will be no cavity inspection (really one of the worst things on the planet).

    1. Jann, I am so happy you were able to guffaw at my misfortune! That was the purpose of this post–to obtain catharsis and hopefully make all of you laugh. Things have improved today, I’m happy to report! The bird poop must have changed the course of life’s happenings! hee hee! :)

  9. I’ve certainly never experienced synchronicity when I’ve needed a pap smear! I’m glad that my doctor is a fairly forgiving woman because, despite my best intentions, that specific day is almost always the one where part of my routine needs to go out the window and that part is usually a shower.

Now that I’m thinking of it, I’m not sure the last time I experienced synchronicity. The last few months have been unbelievably stressful and that’s really what’s present in my mind right now :(.

    1. Aw, Rachel, I’m sorry you’re going through some stressful times, my friend. I’m sending happy thoughts your way and hoping synchronicity will make its way to your door pronto! Hugs! :)

  10. Bella,
I love love love coming to visit you. You make me feel less alone and validated.Haaa
So many kisses coming your way & For ROX. You ROCKkkkkkkkkkkkkk the words.
    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    1. Kim, honey, I’m always so happy when you drop by! Thank you for your loyalty. Love you, lady! Hugs and kisses to you from Rox the fox and me! :)

  11. Who ever said you didn’t experience synchronicity? Everything was in place, except that you had to sweat it out. :) That’s excercise, only that it was against your will. Swimming in the direction of the flow of water is synchronicity. The type of synchronicity that you desire simply comes from waking up ahead of your alarm and smiling gracefuly at everyone you encounter along your way. I hope tomorrow will be better! :)

    1. Tee Cee, today has been better! I think you’re right—had I gotten up earlier, all this misfortune could have been avoided. Except for the walk to the hospital. I don’t think there’s nothing I could have done to get out of that two mile walk! Argh! :)

  12. At some point you have to laugh at your fate, look it in the eye and say, OK, OK, I “get it”. Whatever “it” is, you somehow do understand it now where before the synchronicity you didn’t as much. In a weird way, all these events that appear to add up to a cohesive whole are oddly affirming that life might afterall have a drop or two of meaning… a drop or two of bird poop on the head and suddenly we realize our purpose (is to write a very funny blog post!).

    1. Patrice, if we look at the events of the day in that way, then I can see them all having a purpose. You always enlighten me, girlfriend! I’m so happy you thought this post was funny. I was hoping that was the case! :)

  13. Ah, Bella, I think we’ve all had rotten days like this! If it’s any comfort, I understand a new month is coming up, so maybe your round of luck will change. At any rate, at least you did make it to your appointment (hope all went well!), and hitting your elbow (though painful) isn’t nearly as bad as falling right down the stairs. Have you had enough of my Little Debbie Sunshine act yet?!!

    1. Debbie, I shall never have enough of your “Little Debbie Sunshine” act! I love it! My mother would say that you’re a positive soul and that I need you as a friend! hee hee! But you’re right–it could have been worse. I’m feeling better now, sister! :)

  14. This was hysterical, picturing you trying to make your appointment. Well, I too, recently had my pap smear exam and I got there just fine. For me, the awkward part was when my doctor realized where I work, and started asking me a lot of questions about a certain TV show she loves. A show that is produced in England but is a big hit here, in the states, and frankly I am not involved in it at all, but because I work at a station that airs the show, all bets were off. So, there I am lying with my legs in the stirrups, and she can’t do the exam because she’s intent on finding out plot lines and what was the motivation of a certain character for allowing himself to be imprisoned, knowing he was innocent, and why did someone else lie about whatever. And I tried to answer as best I could, but honey, all I wanted was to get the exam over with! No synchronicity here!

    1. Monica, just when I was thought my situation was bad, I read about you having to answer questions about a TV show you don’t even watch, while having a pap smear! This sheds new perspective on what makes for a bad situation! hee hee! Oh my goodness, how horrible! You poor thing! Indeed, no synchronicity, my friend. I’m so sorry! Thank God you don’t have to have it done for another year! :)

  15. You don’t even want to hear about my last pap. Friends that heard the story are encouraging me to share, but the fates aren’t aligned for that just yet. Love that you are willing to share yours and Monica’s is a hoot too.

    1. Renee, do share! Misery loves company, so come on! In the name of the sisterhood, my friend, give us the details, please! We await with bated breath, lady! :)

  16. My current life is a result of synchronicity… I realized I had feelings for a long-time friend right at the time he started to divorce (nothing to do w/me). We are now happily married. He found a job near where his ex moved his son just as I was really hating my new job. So I had a legit reason for leaving… I was moving! And shortly after he started his job, another attorney left his office, and I got that job. We work together to this day. (There is more synchronicity in this tale… this is the Cliffs Notes version)

    1. Amy, your life story sounds like the stars aligned perfectly and everything worked out the way it was supposed to. You lucky girl! I’m so happy for you! :)

  17. This is a reminder for me to actually schedule one. I am sure I had one well over a year ago. You are so hilarious I could not stop laughing. The good news is that you got there and did your test.

    1. Ciaa, most definitely we have to schedule these dreadful things whether we like them or not. Our lives depend on us being diligent even if it means walking two miles at breakneck speed! I’m tickled pink you found the post funny! Now schedule that pap! :)

  18. Synchronicity either happens or it doesn’t – you can’t force its hand unfortunately. I sympathise with your lack thereof of the day when you had the dreaded pap smear. You also reminded me its time I had one!

    1. Elizabeth, I’m glad this post has served to remind you and Ciaa to schedule a pap. I’m so glad for that because it means that there was a reason for all my tragedy–to remind the both of you! hee hee! :)

  19. Hi, Bella! ~

This is hilarious! Thank God you’re a writer, so you could use the experiences for a positive purpose! Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“The artist is extremely lucky who is presented with the worst possible ordeal which will not actually kill him. At that point, he’s in business.” – John Berryman

    1. Linda, I love, love the quote! I promptly penned it in my “quotes” journal! Thank you for sharing it with us! I’m so happy you found this post funny. After all was said and done, I had a good time writing it! :)

  20. If you can make a morning like that funny…my dear, dear Bella…you can make anything funny. And by the way…sounds like synchronicity to me. Just not the direction you wanted. Things did seem to work like clockwork…just not as you had planned. Its always working, my friend. The hardest part is accepting the fact that the universe alwaysalwaysalways knows more than we do, is one step ahead of us. Sigh. At least there are people like you that can help the rest of us lighten up and laugh about it all…love you, bella Bella, always.

    1. Brynne, you’re right–synchronicity was hard at work even if it wasn’t in my favor. However, like other readers have pointed out, the experience did serve to help me write this blog post. So yes, it did work! Ah, the Universe, how it conspires against me sometimes! hee hee! Love you, girly! :)

  21. Ten minutes later, I was on a gurney being told to prop my legs on stirrups and relax.
(An oxymoron, if you ask me.) Yeah, that’s good example of an oxymoron!
I’m sorry to hear about your unhappy day Bella. :-(
I’d rather have a bird poop on my head than a pap smear.
Right off the bat I can’t think of a time I experienced synchronicity, I’m still
too shaken by your bad day. I hope you and babygirl are well.

    1. Debra, I love it when you make your way to my blog because you always make me smile! Indeed, bird poop on one’s head is preferable than a pap smear! hee hee! Babygirl and I are doing well. Thank you so much for asking, lady! We send you hugs and kisses! :)

  22. Dear God!! What a horrible, awful, you-so-deserve-free-coffees for the rest of your life, day! I am so sorry.

(I’m also sorry that I’ve fallen out of the blogosphere, Bella. Your kind encouragements have not gone unnoticed. You’re the best! But I’m the magnet of bad news lately, which leaves me with a single thing to share or say. It’s bizarre, but true. I’m researching a new novel, so that’s good, but the rest is bird poop in my hair. I’ll spare you the details. I may just officially wrap up “The Ole Master Plan,” but am sitting on it for the moment.)

    1. Lori, please, please tell me you’re not “wrapping up” “The Ole Master Plan”! I love your blog and I would miss your posts so much! (Hence my reason for nudging you every now and then!) Of course I understand that it’s your decision to make but know that you will be sorely missed, amiga! :)

  23. Gurl,

I’m not sure such a thing exists. It’s a cruel hoax if you ask me. Those days are so rare and fleeting, it’s like catching a butterfly without killing it LMAO. That’s ok, it makes them all the more beautiful and mind blowing. After all, it’s human nature to value what’s rare. If it’s too commonplace, we don’t appreciate it half as much. Hope all is well. That’s my 2 cents…

    Hugz,

    C.

    1. Coco, those moments are rare and you’ve hit the nail on the head regarding why we covet them so much! But don’t you wish they came more often? Or at the very least, that we’d have less bird poop days? hee hee! I love it when you drop by! :)

  24. Bella,

Do you ever get the crazy feeling that you just want to jump out of your skin. Better yet, the ability to teleport would be extremely useful. Sad that humans haven’t invented it yet :(.

Lippy. LMAO. How did you not bust out laughing in her face? She must’ve been young and self absorbed that’s the only excuse i can think of.

I didn’t go to the beach this summer, sad, sad, sad. The beach is my favorite place in the world, truly. I had hoped that the freakish weather would last long enough to give me a chance for a mad dash but oddly things seem right on schedule. Fall has arrived. Glad to see that you and Roxy have a firm grip on what matters :)

    1. Oh girl, I did have a hard time keeping a serious face, trust me. But in the end, I admit our bubbly friend was just trying to help my lips look groovier! ha! You can still go to the beach in fall, lady! You won’t be laying on the sand but I hear walks with the wind whipping your hair left and right can be pretty romantic! Wink! :)

  25. It’s odd you wrote Synchronicity because that word has just been humming in my head the whole time – is that synchronicity? But I must share with you this. Two nights ago I was torn about a decision I had made and now undecided how to proceed. Deep inside I knew I should have said No from the start but now I had to decide if I still go on or try to extricate myself. A flood of questions. I was really open to wanting to do what would be the best thing to do. The next morning I turned on my phone and got an email notification. It was from my close trusted friend who knew nothing of what I was going through. I opened the mail and the first line in bold was NO. Learning to say NO. My heart skipped a beat. Not yet convinced, I needed my husband to also support my change of mind, he suddenly came up and said, “You know if you don’t feel you are up to it, do tell them No.” And right there a series of synchronicity I guess.

By the way, I have heard the birds pooping on your head is the ultimate sign of good luck. I think you had synchronicity (aargh the spelling!) by your side all along babe. Excellent writing. Many hugs, Sharon.

    1. Sharon, I love it how you had help from the Universe and your husband in regard to changing your mind. I agree, we have to learn to say no. Unfortunately, many times we get caught up doing what we think we should do, or what is expected of us and it’s so tiring. I’m glad synchronicity had a hand in your final decision! I too have heard that bird poop is a sign of good luck. I haven’t had any yet, but I’m hopeful! Thank you so much for your sweet visits, my friend! :)

  26. Ah, my good friend, I’ve missed you!!!
You should maybe put warnings on your posts. Warning: This post will cause excessive laughter. Do not eat, drink, or operate heavy machinery while reading. Because I choked on my banana and dropped my soup bowl on my foot. Don’t worry. It’s a good thing . . .
    Loved this post!!!

    1. And I have missed you, Diane! A visit to your blog is on my “to do” list, my friend! I’m delighted you liked the post and I’m over the moon that you found it funny! :)

  27. Oh my! I don’t believe what I’m hearing about dear little Roxy. Perhaps this is a cry for help, maybe it’s hormonal? I think a trip to the vet or like you said a vistit from The Dog Whisperer is in order.
Seriously though, this post was hilarious and Roxy is just as adorable as ever. I don’t care what the other dogs are saying about her!

    1. Sheila, I know, it’s hard to believe but trust me, she’s been acting like a tiny heathen! ha! I wish I had some connections that would get me a sit in with the Dog Whisperer. Sadly, this isn’t the case and so I’ve scheduled an appointment with the vet. A phone consult did reveal that you may be right–she thinks it’s hormonal too. Roxy told me to tell you that she loves you for loving her unconditionally! :)

  28. Bella, I heard of the theory of Synchronicity just about few weeks ago. I admit I haven’t quite figured it out yet. I’m struggling to find the differences between Synchronicity and coincidence. 3 weeks ago, I was meant to go to a tour with a group. I had to call off due to the date getting changed. Then 1 week before the tour date, I found out that I could still make it but by then the tour had got all booked out. I forgot about the whole thing. 3 days before the tour date, I contacted the tour manager just to find out if she could squeeze me in. I was just trying my luck, really didn’t expect anything. Guess what? Not just there was a spot for me but also I’d got a free ticket due to one of the group members not being able to make it and not wanting a refund either. How good is that? Last week, I was talking to my swimming instructor at the end of the lesson. We had a nice casual chat. Found out a lot about her. I will be honest; I wanted to ask her out. But, the conversation ended differently. I just said goodbye to each other and I walked away. As I was changing in the change room, I was kicking myself for not asking her out. Then at some point I thought I wish I ran into her again on the way out, I’d surely ask her out. Guess what? It exactly happened how I wished. However, I was still stupid and didn’t ask her out. But, we met again on the way out. The coincidence was amazing. I need some guidance here. Are these what you’d call “Synchronicity”? Or they are just coincidences? Your help would be much appreciated.

    -Tarek

    1. Hi Tarek! I don’t think coincidences exist. It may sound cliched, but everything happens for a reason. I think synchronicity was with you on all the occasions you mentioned. Without a doubt, you were on the path of harmony. I always, always start off my day asking the Universe to place me directly on the path of harmony. On days when I forget to do this (rarely, but it’s been known to happen), things don’t go the way they should. Fortunately, making the petition always serves as the best damage control. I’m delighted you shared your story with us, Tarek! I think you should always follow your initial instinct. And remember, no guts, no glory, my friend! :)
